Orpheus was the son of a muse and the God Apollo – he was gifted with a beautiful voice that made even the plants/rocks dance! Like his father, he commonly is depicted with a lyre. He fell in love with a nymph named Eurydice (you-rid-Essy) and they got married. There are several different versions of her death, but in most versions she is bit by a snake and passes away. Orpheus couldn’t accept that and went to the Underworld to try and save her. Hades made him a deal, he could leave the underworld with Eurydice walking behind him, only he could not look back to make sure she was really there. Orpheus made it almost to the end but had a moment of doubt because he could not hear her footsteps behind him, she was a shade/ghost and couldn’t make any sound! But he feared that Hades had tricked him so turned around, he saw her spirit sink back into the Underworld and thus she was lost to him forever. The sad part is, Orpheus didn’t want to live in a world without her and wished for death. However the gods thought it would be such a waste to not have his voice, they cut off his head so they would be able to hear him sing forever.
The Greek Mythology collection is one I’ve had in my brain for almost a year now and I am so excited to have it available now!
Some background on these acrylic material pieces, all shapes/illustrations are designed by me either on my iPad or on Adobe Illustrator. They are cut out with a laser cutter and then need to have their backings peeled off front and back before they are assembled.
Despite being a type of plastic, they are still very durable and lightweight. All the earrings posts are nickel free and hypoallergenic. To attach my earring posts, I use resin, if you have any known allergies, feel free to reach out to me via email and I can use another method for you.
